Cyprus general strike disrupts schools, flights and services

Date:

Cyprus is under the grip of a three-hour Cyprus general strike today, running from 11:00 to 14:00, after negotiations over the cost-of-living allowance (ATA) collapsed.

The nationwide strike, called by trade unions, is expected to paralyse much of the country. Workers across the public and wider public sector are taking part, joined by large numbers from the private sector.

Parents face disruption as schools will close at 11:00, requiring children to be collected early. Hospitals will operate with emergency staff only, leading to cancelled appointments and postponed non-urgent surgeries. More than 50 flights and around 15,000 passengers are expected to be affected at the island’s airports.

Public services, including Citizen Service Centres, will shut during the strike hours. Public transport will also halt, leaving commuters stranded.

Union members from SEK, PEO, PASYDY and DEOK will stage rallies at noon in all districts: outside the Finance Ministry in Nicosia, the District Office in Limassol, the District Administration in Larnaca, the Labour Ministry office in Paralimni, and the District Administration in Paphos.

Police have drawn up operational plans in each district to manage traffic and provide assistance during the industrial action.
