Cyprus and Greece push EU support for GSI project in New York

Date:

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis held a meeting in New York on Tuesday, where they underlined the importance of the EU’s support for the GSI project.

According to diplomatic sources, the two leaders stressed that the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), which will link the electricity grids of Cyprus, Greece, and Israel, is a project of common European interest. They highlighted that close coordination with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa remains essential, particularly in light of positions expressed in recent months.

Cyprus and Greece have reaffirmed their joint commitment to the GSI project and are actively working to secure the necessary EU backing to ensure its timely progress. The leaders exchanged views on the next steps required and agreed to continue aligning their actions with Brussels.

The GSI project is expected to enhance energy security in the region by connecting Cyprus to the European electricity network, reducing isolation and strengthening cooperation among member states.
