Cypriot-American Republican Michael Tannousis has secured another term in the New York State Assembly, retaining his seat in the 64th District in the US midterm elections.
Tannousis defeated Democratic challenger Shpetim “Tim” Qorraj in Tuesday’s vote, according to reports published on Wednesday.
Represents parts of Brooklyn and Staten Island
The 64th Assembly District covers parts of southern Brooklyn and the eastern shore of Staten Island, where Tannousis was born in 1983. He has represented the district since 2021.
His parents are of Cypriot origin and left the island following the 1974 Turkish invasion.
Tannousis has also been involved with the Cypriot-American community, serving as a board member of the Cypriot-American Chamber of Commerce and as a delegate of the Cyprus Federation of America, according to the report.
Democrats take control of Congress
His re-election came as the US midterm elections produced a change in control of Congress, with Democrats winning majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, according to Associated Press projections.
Midterm elections take place halfway through a US president’s four-year term, with all 435 seats in the House and around one-third of the Senate seats contested.
