Democrats have won control of both chambers of Congress in the 2026 US midterm elections, delivering a major electoral setback to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, according to the Associated Press (AP).
The party secured at least seven Senate seats previously held by Republicans, including victories in traditionally Republican states and key battlegrounds.
The states where Democrats flipped Senate seats include Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina. The party also retained competitive seats in Georgia and Michigan.
The victory in Kansas is particularly significant, as the state has not elected a Democratic senator in nearly a century.
In the House of Representatives, Democrats flipped more than two dozen districts, including several that had voted for Trump by double-digit margins in the 2024 presidential election.
Democrats also made gains in gubernatorial races, winning elections in four states previously governed by Republicans.
Keisha Lance Bottoms won in Georgia, Amy Acton in Ohio, Rob Sand in Iowa and Gina Hinojosa in Texas.
Trump faces new political challenges
The results leave Trump facing a significantly reshaped political landscape during the final two years of his presidency.
With Democrats controlling both chambers, the party will be able to block parts of the president’s legislative agenda, reject appointments and launch investigations into his administration.
Trump had repeatedly urged voters to treat the midterm elections as a referendum on his presidency, telling them to “pretend I’m on the ballot”.
Following the Republican losses, however, he sought to distance himself from the outcome, praising Democratic campaign efforts and blaming Republican candidates for their defeats.
According to the AP Voter Poll, many voters appeared to hold Trump’s administration responsible for the high cost of living and supported stronger congressional oversight of the president.
