Clashes at AEK-AEL match: Female officer injured

A female police officer was injured in the leg during violent clashes following the football match between AEK and AEL, which took place on Sunday, 2 February, at AEK Arena.

According to Spyros Chrysostomou, spokesperson for the Larnaca Police Directorate, incidents erupted at the end of the match, prompting the police to use tear gas to disperse fans who had initially thrown stones and later escalated to launching Molotov cocktails and naval flares at police officers.

As a result of the violence, one female police officer sustained an injury and was taken to the Accident and Emergency Department of Larnaca General Hospital. After medical examinations, she was diagnosed with a bruise on her shin.

The circumstances surrounding her injury are currently under investigation. Meanwhile, members of the Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department (CID) are set to visit the stadium today to collect evidence related to the case.

Police suspect that the Molotov cocktails and naval flares were likely stored outside the stadium by supporters and retrieved after the match had ended as they exited the venue.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
