Nikos Christodoulides said democracy had spoken through the people and stressed that the verdict of the Cypriot electorate must be fully respected following the announcement of the final parliamentary election results on Sunday night.
Speaking from the Presidential Palace, the President thanked everyone who worked “professionally for the smooth organisation and conduct” of the parliamentary elections.
He also congratulated all candidates and political parties for participating in the electoral process and extended congratulations to the newly elected MPs, calling for cooperation with the new Parliament.
“Our democracy grows stronger through participation, dialogue and debate based on arguments and respect for differing opinions,” he said.
Government to continue reform agenda
The President said the Government would continue working consistently to implement its programme.
He referred to plans for “a stronger economy, more opportunities for the younger generation, a more effective state, social cohesion and reforms that improve citizens’ daily lives”, while also aiming for “a Cyprus that is more resilient, modern and reliable”.
Responding to questions from journalists, the President said DIPA and EDEK deserved to remain in Parliament.
“They deserved to be there,” he said, noting that both parties narrowly failed to secure representation by only a small number of votes.
Commitment to political cooperation
Christodoulides repeated that his administration remains committed to the ideological direction of social liberalism and said the Government would continue pursuing policies through political cooperation, as it had done since taking office.
He said the messages from the election encouraged the Government to continue “with even greater determination”.
The President highlighted issues including tax reform, foreign policy, Cyprus’ European and Western orientation, security, economic stability and migration management, saying these policies were being judged positively by citizens.
Focus on national unity
The President stressed that cooperation with the new House of Representatives of Cyprus would be meaningful, sincere and institutionally responsible.
“Our Government will continue working to achieve convergences where there are shared concerns, common priorities and common understandings regarding the public interest,” he said.
He added that the Cyprus issue remains the country’s top national priority and said institutional cooperation and unity of purpose were essential at a time of major regional and international challenges.
“The next day requires collective responsibility and effort for the country’s progress,” he said.
“With full respect for the people’s verdict and a firm commitment to serving the interests of the Cypriot people, we will continue working for a stronger, more modern and more European Cyprus.”
DISY position respected
Asked about comments by Annita Demetriou that the Democratic Rally would not cooperate with the Government or participate in a possible cabinet reshuffle, the President said her position was fully respected.
“I have nothing to comment on regarding the opinion she expressed,” he said.
He added that there would be opportunities in the coming days to answer further questions and discuss the election outcome in more detail.
