The Attorney General filed a criminal case on Thursday at the Nicosia District Court against one individual and two legal entities, in connection with a possible conflict of interest involving an official of the Cyprus Football Association (CFA).
Sources from the Law Office confirmed the case filing to CNA but did not provide further details on the individuals or offences involved.
Background of the investigation
The case follows a report by the Ethics and Sports Protection Committee, submitted to the Attorney General. The Attorney General then requested a criminal investigation by the police and appointed independent criminal investigator Alexandra Lykourgou. She submitted her report to the Law Office in September 2025.
The prosecution specifically concerns former CFA president Giorgos Koumas, who is accused of a conflict of interest related to professional interests during his tenure.
Koumas currently abroad
Koumas is currently abroad. His lawyer, Chris Triantafyllides, told Sigma that Koumas is expected to return within a week. Upon his return, he will be formally served with the charges and given a court date to appear, at which point standard legal procedures will commence.
Tensions over fair trial concerns
The Attorney General’s announcement sparked a public exchange between Triantafyllides and investigator Lykourgou regarding the right to a fair trial. Triantafyllides previously argued that Lykourgou has no authority to adjudicate or interpret evidence and that her statements simplify his legal defence.
Lykourgou responded in writing to the Cyprus News Agency, emphasising that her public statements do not violate the presumption of innocence or the right to a fair trial, which are ultimately upheld by Cypriot courts.
Triantafyllides reiterated his view, saying, “If this is her opinion, we are pleased she continues to make statements, as it makes our defence work easier.”
Investigation process
The Attorney General had ordered the criminal investigation and appointed Lykourgou, a former senior district judge, to lead it. She conducted the inquiry with a team of four CID investigators, and the final report was submitted to the Law Office in early September 2025.
