Cyprus has approved significant financial support for livestock farmers, with assistance levels exceeding equivalent European measures by 150% to 200%, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Wednesday.
Speaking ahead of the General Assembly of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber in Limassol, the President said the decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting.
Concerns linked to foot-and-mouth disease
The comments came in response to criticism from livestock farmers over the handling of foot-and-mouth disease concerns and complaints that no direct meeting had taken place with the President.
Christodoulides said representatives of the sector had already held meetings with the Agriculture Ministry and officials, stressing that “there is one government”.
Support exceeds European levels
“Today, the Cabinet decided on support for livestock farmers, and this support exceeds by 150% to 200% what is being provided at European level,” the President said.
He added that the government’s fiscal policy allows Cyprus to respond effectively to both domestic and international challenges.
Focus on key sectors
The President also said responsible economic management enables continued investment in critical sectors including healthcare, education, housing and social welfare.
