Details have emerged about the tragic accident in Cyprus that claimed the life of 20-year-old law student Irini Kontogiorgou, who had been studying on the island for the past few years. Her aunt has spoken about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The young woman was in a rented car with six other people, driven by a peer who was reportedly six times over the legal alcohol limit. The collision was severe, and Irini died instantly, while the other passengers were injured.
“We are awaiting the police report. The driver was under the influence of alcohol… They were all fellow students from various schools. The car had been rented by one of Irini’s friends and classmates. There were five of them, with two other friends following on scooters. Because it was raining and the road was slippery, they left their scooters and got into the car. That made seven people in total. Three were in the front, three in the back, and one in the trunk. They decided to let this particular person drive. At a roundabout, they crashed. The car was shattered. The forensic report says Irini suffered a fatal head injury and died instantly,” her aunt told STAR News.
“Her Mother Is in a Terrible State”
Irini’s aunt described the unbearable grief of the young woman’s mother, who is struggling to come to terms with her loss.
“She lost her only child. She hasn’t yet realized that her daughter is gone. She’s in a state of shock,” the aunt said.
Heartbroken, she added, “To me, she was my only niece, who was like a daughter to me. She was named after my beloved mother, who also died young.”
“The students in Cyprus are devastated. They even postponed a planned celebration on Saturday, November 23, in her memory.”
Finally, she urged young people to exercise caution while driving, noting the rising number of fatal road accidents involving young individuals.
