August rainfall in Cyprus reached levels ten times higher than the normal monthly average, according to preliminary data released by the Department of Meteorology on Monday.
Based on data recorded up to Monday morning, 31 August, average rainfall in the government-controlled areas reached 30 millimetres, compared with a normal monthly average of 2.9 millimetres. This represents an increase of 1,034%.
Of the 30 millimetres recorded, 22.5 millimetres fell during the final three days of the month.
Platania records highest rainfall
The highest amount of August rainfall was recorded in Platania, where 83.9 millimetres fell, compared with a normal monthly average of 12.8 millimetres. This represents an increase of 655%.
In percentage terms, the largest increases were recorded in Frenaros and Xylotymbou, where rainfall exceeded the normal monthly level by more than 200 times.
Frenaros recorded 27.3 millimetres, compared with a normal 0.1 millimetres, representing an increase of 27,300%.
Xylotymbou recorded 40 millimetres, compared with a normal 0.2 millimetres, an increase of 20,000%.
Sharp increases across Cyprus
Larnaca Airport recorded 26.2 millimetres of rainfall, compared with a normal 0.6 millimetres, making the total more than 40 times the monthly average.
At Gefyri Panagias, rainfall reached 43.4 millimetres, compared with a normal 1.5 millimetres, or almost 30 times the average.
With the exception of Pano Panagia, where no rainfall was recorded, and Paphos Airport, where rainfall reached the seasonal average at 0.2 millimetres, all Department of Meteorology stations recorded rainfall well above the normal level for August.
Rainfall above normal for the year
From 1 October 2025 to the end of August 2026, total rainfall reached 608.3 millimetres, equivalent to 122% of the normal amount for the corresponding period.
All monitoring stations across Cyprus recorded rainfall exceeding 100% of the normal level for the period.
