Are there camera fines for crossing a red light for an ambulance?

Date:

Drivers who cross a red light to give way to an emergency vehicle like an ambulance may not face penalties, even if recorded by a traffic camera.

Police clarify that in cases involving an emergency services, motorists who were complying with the law by giving priority can request a review and have the fine deleted.

Legal obligation to give way

Granting priority to emergency vehicles is mandatory and can be lifesaving.

Under current legislation, drivers must give way when approached by:

  • Ambulances
  • Police vehicles
  • Military Police vehicles of the National Guard
  • Fire Service vehicles
  • Fire engines of the Department of Forests
  • Civil Defence vehicles
  • Lifeguard rescue vehicles

This obligation applies when the vehicle has both flashing lights and siren activated.

Drivers must immediately move as close as possible to the edge of the road and stop until the emergency vehicle has passed.

Failure to comply carries a penalty of up to one year imprisonment, a fine of up to €3,000, or both.

What if a camera records the violation?

Incidents have been observed at photo-enforced intersections where fixed traffic cameras operate. Some drivers hesitate to move through a red light out of fear of being fined.

Police state that if a driver is reported by the Photo Enforcement System while giving way to an emergency vehicle, authorities will examine the case upon request and take the necessary steps to delete the fine.

In such cases as crossing a camera-enforced red light for an ambulance, drivers are encouraged to submit a request for review so the circumstances can be assessed.

Why every second counts

Authorities stress that response time in emergency situations is critical. Even a delay of one minute can make the difference between life and death.

Providing space reduces the risk of road collisions and allows emergency personnel to reach incidents safely and without obstruction.

Ensuring unobstructed passage helps crews respond effectively and potentially save lives and property.
