The Department of Road Transport has released an update on the progress of the defective airbags recall in Cyprus. In February 2025, authorities identified 81,060 vehicles with faulty airbags, all of which were recalled for road safety reasons.
Vehicle owners urged to replace airbags
Of these vehicles, 5,271 owners have not completed the replacement, resulting in the suspension of their roadworthiness certificates under current legislation. The Department has implemented all prescribed control and suspension measures for vehicles identified in February 2025.
March–December recall figures
Between March and December 2025, authorities detected 19,929 vehicles with defective airbags. So far, 3,216 of these vehicles have not undergone the recall. Some have already been immobilised due to either manufacturer directives for immediate action or the expiry of the eight-month deadline provided for airbag replacement, while the remainder are still within the allowable timeframe for replacement.
Department calls for swift action
The Department urges companies to accelerate the supply of parts and improve service for vehicle owners. It also calls again on owners who have not responded to complete the replacement of defective airbags without delay.
Safety reminder remains in effect
Authorities remind the public of the initial recommendation not to use vehicles under recall due to defective airbags until the component has been replaced.
