Applications open for energy upgrade scheme, support up to €32,000

Date:

Home renovation grants of up to €32,000 are available from Tuesday, 20 October, under a new government scheme supporting energy-efficiency upgrades in existing homes.

The €20 million “Save–Upgrade in Homes (2026)” scheme opened for applications at 9am and will remain open until 30 December 2026, at 11.59pm, or until the available funds are exhausted.

Announced by the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry, the scheme forms part of the THALIA 2021–2027 programme and is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the Republic of Cyprus.

Applications must be submitted online through the official funding platform. They will be assessed in order of submission, meaning applicants are encouraged to prepare their documents early.

Who is eligible for the grants?

Individuals can apply, with each applicant permitted to submit only one application.

To qualify, a home must belong to a natural person and have an existing Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) residential electricity account registered in an individual’s name.

The property must also have been connected to the electricity grid for the first time before 1 January 2008.

Alternatively, homes may qualify if an application for a planning or building permit was submitted before 21 December 2007.

Which home improvements are covered?

The scheme supports a range of measures designed to improve a property’s energy efficiency, including:

  • Thermal insulation.
  • Replacement of windows and frames.
  • Installation of shading systems.
  • Solar water-heating systems.
  • High-efficiency air-conditioning units.
  • Heat pumps.
  • Photovoltaic systems and battery storage.
  • Eligible services provided by qualified experts.

The amount awarded depends on the type of energy upgrade completed and the energy savings achieved.

How much can homeowners receive?

Higher grants are available for eligible homes belonging to vulnerable consumers, properties in mountainous areas and refugee-owned homes in refugee housing estates, subject to the scheme’s conditions.

Energy Performance Certificate is required

Applicants must obtain an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) issued on or after 15 May 2026.

The certificate must be issued by a qualified expert registered with the Energy Service’s official register.

Once the renovation work is completed, the required energy savings will be verified by comparing the original certificate with a new EPC issued after the upgrades.

Can homeowners apply if work has already started?

Work carried out before an application is submitted may still qualify, provided it took place after the original Energy Performance Certificate was issued.

However, all eligible investments must not have been completed before the application is submitted.

Homeowners who have already started work should keep supporting documents, including invoices and photographs.

The Ministry also warns that spending money before receiving approval is at the applicant’s own risk and does not guarantee that a grant will be awarded.

Where to apply and get information

Applications are accepted exclusively online through the funding platform.

Detailed eligibility criteria, eligible expenses and documentation requirements are available through the Department of Industry and Technology’s website.

For further information, applicants can call 17107.

As applications are assessed on a first-come, first-served basis, the scheme may close before 30 December if the €20 million budget is exhausted.
