Ambulance patient death under investigation after family complaint

Date:

A serious complaint is under investigation after a woman reportedly died following multiple falls during her transfer to an ambulance in Nicosia last Tuesday.

According to the woman’s son, the family called for an ambulance to take his mother- who was overweight and confined to a wheelchair- to Nicosia General Hospital due to severe rib pain. Upon arrival, one of the paramedics allegedly attempted to move her alone, causing her to fall and hit her head on a door.

The family claims she turned blue immediately after the fall. During subsequent efforts to lift her from the wheelchair onto the stretcher, she allegedly fell two more times, again injuring her head.

A short time later, the family was informed that the woman had died en route to the hospital.

The son said X-rays revealed head injuries and noted that the official report stated she was conscious when picked up, a claim he disputes. The family believes her death was caused by the repeated falls, a claim now being investigated by police.

A post-mortem has already been carried out by state pathologist Nikola Haralambous, in the presence of forensic expert Marios Matsakis, representing the family. Matsakis confirmed the presence of head injuries and said samples had been taken for histological analysis.
