Christodoulides-Erhürman meetings to continue weekly

Wednesday’s meeting between President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman has been positively assessed by Nicosia.

Government sources told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that, despite the “prevailing atmosphere” of recent days, the joint statement issued by the two leaders, which refers to weekly meetings, offers hope for continued engagement.

The Christodoulides-Erhürman meeting lasted almost three hours, with the two leaders spending most of the time in a private discussion.

Government sources said both the length of the meeting and the decision to establish weekly contacts suggest that the discussion was constructive and provide direction for its continuation.

Weekly contacts ahead of key dates

Nicosia’s assessment also takes into account the expected visit of European Council President António Costa on 4 September, as well as the expected arrival of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, next week.

Despite what has been seen as an unfavourable climate in recent days, including developments surrounding festivals in the occupied areas and efforts to cancel them, as well as statements from the Turkish Cypriot side on alleged property usurpation and other issues, the meeting was considered positive.

“The prevailing atmosphere had suggested that we would be heading towards a deadlocked meeting,” government sources told CNA. However, they said the discussion appeared to have been productive and substantive.

Sources also highlighted the importance of the two leaders taking this step, speaking privately for an extended period and agreeing to a specific schedule of weekly contacts.

The upcoming UN General Assembly in New York was also described as a natural time milestone.

Focus on intensive contacts before New York

According to the same sources, Nicosia’s objective is to maintain intensive contacts until the UN General Assembly in New York.

At the same time, they stressed that Turkey’s role in developments cannot be overlooked.

The Christodoulides-Erhürman meeting is therefore viewed by Nicosia as a positive step towards maintaining momentum in contacts between the two sides.

A low-pressure system developing over the Adriatic Sea is moving southeast and is expected to affect Cyprus from Wednesday afternoon, bringing worsening weather conditions and potentially heavy, prolonged rainfall. According to the Department of Meteorology, weak low pressure currently affects the region, with isolated showers and thunderstorms expected ahead of the approaching system. The Cyprus heavy rain forecast indicates that conditions will deteriorate from Wednesday afternoon, initially in western areas before spreading gradually across the rest of the island. Monday: Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms Today, Monday, the weather will be partly cloudy and occasionally mostly cloudy. Initially, isolated showers are expected, with the possibility of an isolated thunderstorm, mainly along the western and northwestern coasts. After midday, developing clouds are expected to bring isolated showers and possibly a thunderstorm, particularly in the mountains, northern areas and inland. Winds will initially be light and variable at Force 3 on the Beaufort scale, gradually becoming mainly southwesterly to northwesterly, light to moderate at Force 3 to 4. In southwestern areas, winds may temporarily strengthen to Force 4 to 5. The sea will generally be calm to slightly rough. After midday, isolated showers or thunderstorms are expected, mainly in the mountains, inland and northern areas. Temperatures will remain at approximately the same levels as Monday. Wednesday: Weather deteriorates from the afternoon Wednesday will be mostly cloudy, with localised rainfall and isolated thunderstorms expected at intervals, particularly across the western half of the island. From the afternoon onwards, weather conditions are expected to deteriorate, initially in western Cyprus before gradually spreading to other areas. Rainfall and thunderstorms could be locally intense or prolonged, according to the Department of Meteorology. The approaching low-pressure system is expected to bring the most significant change in conditions during this period. Thursday: Rain continues as temperatures fall Thursday will remain mostly cloudy, with localised showers and isolated thunderstorms expected at intervals. Temperatures will gradually decline between Tuesday and Thursday, falling below the seasonal average. The Cyprus heavy rain forecast therefore points to a marked deterioration in conditions from Wednesday afternoon, with unsettled weather continuing into Thursday.
