Update:
A shocking discovery in Alimos took a mysterious turn after it was revealed that the four-month-old Roma baby, found abandoned next to a rubbish bin, may have been abducted earlier the same day.
According to police, the incident began around 2:20 PM in Athens’ bustling Omonia district. A 45-year-old Roma woman, believed to be the baby’s grandmother, reported that she was walking with the child on Aiolou Street when a man approached them.
The woman claimed the man offered to help, suggesting they go to a nearby supermarket to buy something for the baby. Moments later, she says, the man snatched the infant and disappeared. It remains unclear whether the abduction occurred on the street or inside a shop.
Two hours later, the baby was discovered kilometres away in Alimos, lying next to a row of rubbish bins. Authorities are now investigating who left the child there and why.
The grandmother is currently being questioned by the Special Unit for Child Protection, while officers review surveillance camera footage from Omonia and along Poseidonos Avenue for clues.
The incident has sparked public outcry and raised concerns about child safety and poverty. Social media is flooded with messages of support for the infant, many calling it a “miracle” that she survived.
