Nearly three years after the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during filming, the much-discussed Rust had its world premiere last week at the Camerimage International Film Festival in Poland.
Although lead actor Alec Baldwin did not attend, he spoke to Variety at the Torino Film Festival about the tragic incident and the challenges he has faced over the past few years due to the case.
Baldwin told Variety that this is obviously the hardest thing he’s ever dealt with in his. He shared that the incident brought immense pain, not only to him but also to his wife, who has been deeply affected. The Rust actor described how their relatively stable life was abruptly disrupted, calling the experience both frightening and upsetting. He acknowledged their efforts to move forward but noted that the film would forever be overshadowed by the tragedy.
In his first festival appearance since the tragedy, Baldwin revealed that he has no desire to watch Rust. However, he expressed hope that the film would be sold and shown in cinemas. He disclosed that he had waived his fee for the movie, with the money instead going to Hutchins’ husband, Matt. Baldwin revealed that he has not watched the film but expressed his hope that it would be released and shown in theatres. He emphasised the importance of the project generating returns for the investors, stating that those who believed in the film should not be left with nothing.
The actor also emphasised his focus on staying strong and present for his family.
Baldwin expressed his desire to put everything related to Rust behind him so he could focus on other things for his children. At 66 years old, he emphasised the importance of having the energy to be present for them. He admitted that the past two years had been emotionally draining due to the situation, highlighting the responsibility of saving one’s best years for their children, which he described as the most challenging aspect for him.
