Authorities to reassess structural safety
A total of 226 dangerous buildings have been recorded across the city and district of Paphos, according to data presented by local authorities.
The issue will be discussed at a meeting next Tuesday in Nicosia between the presidents of all District Local Government Organisations (EOA), the Technical Chamber of Cyprus (ETEK), and the Union of Municipalities.
Review of structural condition planned
EOA Paphos President Charalambos Pittokopitis said the aim is to reassess all buildings previously classified as dangerous, in order to update records and reflect their current condition.
The initiative seeks closer cooperation with ETEK to carry out technical inspections and improve the accuracy of safety data.
According to the latest figures, 71 dangerous buildings are located within Paphos municipality, with 10 to 12 considered to be in a particularly critical condition.
A further 109 are located in communities across the district, while 46 are recorded in the Polis Chrysochous municipality.
Most of the affected buildings in rural areas are reportedly uninhabited, while the most serious concern lies in inhabited apartment blocks within the city.
Inspections and safety measures
Authorities have carried out on-site inspections alongside civil engineers, concluding that there is currently no immediate risk of collapse, although further reassessments will follow. Where necessary, evacuation orders may be issued under existing legal provisions.
Officials also highlighted the need for closer cooperation with the Law Office and Parliament to address legislative gaps.
They warned that current procedures are time-consuming, increasing potential risks if urgent action is delayed.
