Akamas: “First safety, then visitors” for Loutra–Fontana road

Ministry responds to Akamas access road findings

The Ministry of Agriculture has acknowledged that recommendations by the Audit Office regarding the Akamas access road reflect “real challenges” that are already being managed by the state.

The ministry stressed that safe access along the Loutra Aphroditis – Fontana Amorosa road in the Akamas Peninsula is essential for protecting human life, the natural environment and the operational readiness of state services in the sensitive area.

According to the ministry, the road in Akamas is not only used for visitors but also serves as a critical route for fire services and emergency response units.

It noted that while managing visitor access is important, it is a secondary issue compared to ensuring safety and operational functionality in the area.

Even under controlled access conditions, a minimum level of technical safety and infrastructure functionality is required, the ministry added.

Audit Office concerns and infrastructure issues

The Audit Office has previously identified serious deficiencies in the road network within Akamas, including dangerous potholes and steep drops, raising concerns over safety standards.

The ministry said it has already recognised these challenges and is working to address them through ongoing management measures.

The Forestry Department has submitted a request to the Environmental Authority for limited and temporary improvements to the Akamas road, aimed at enhancing safety and ensuring emergency vehicle access.

Officials clarified that the proposal does not involve a full upgrade of the road, but rather targeted interventions designed to improve immediate safety conditions.

Long-term planning for Akamas park

The ministry said the permanent solution for the Akamas road is linked to the broader operational plan for the national forest park.

This includes controlled visitor access, transport systems for visitors and a comprehensive regulation of the road network as part of the overall management framework.

Authorities aim to transition from the current interim situation to a fully regulated and sustainable model with reduced environmental impact.

The ministry reiterated its commitment to balancing environmental protection with public safety in the Akamas Peninsula.
