Cyprus’ Cabinet on Wednesday appointed emeritus professor of the University of Athens and criminal law expert Ilias Anagnostopoulos to the team of independent criminal investigators, replacing Christos Mylonopoulos, who withdrew from the group.
Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis announced the decision following the Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace.
Anagnostopoulos and the other criminal investigators are expected to arrive in Cyprus early next week to begin their work based on the findings of the Anti-Corruption Authority’s report concerning Makarios Drousiotis’ book Mafia State.
Government approves logistical support
Letymbiotis also said the Cabinet approved all necessary support for the independent criminal investigators, including administrative assistance and logistical infrastructure.
According to the spokesperson, suitable office space with full equipment has already been secured, while arrangements have been completed for the personnel who will provide administrative support to the investigative team.
Response to concerns over appointment
Asked about concerns raised regarding Anagnostopoulos’ appointment, Letymbiotis said the arguments presented “are in no way connected to the terms of reference of either the Anti-Corruption Authority or, consequently, the team of independent criminal investigators.”
He added that the Anti-Corruption Authority had already clarified that the so-called “black van” case was not part of its investigation and is therefore not included in the report that will be examined by the criminal investigators.
The Government Spokesperson concluded that the investigative team should be allowed to begin its work as soon as possible, study the report in depth and investigate all matters contained within it.
