Residents of Cyprus made 3,815,322 trips in 2025, up from 3,366,862 in 2024, according to data published by Eurostat on Friday. The figures cover trips taken for both personal and professional reasons.
Across the European Union, residents made a total of 1.20 billion trips in 2025, an increase of 1.4% compared with the previous year. This represented approximately 17 million additional trips.
92% of trips were within the EU
Trips within residents’ own countries accounted for 848 million journeys, or 70% of the EU total. A further 264 million trips, representing 22%, were made to another EU member state.
Overall, 92% of all trips had destinations within the EU. The remaining 8% were to destinations outside the bloc, with fewer than half of those journeys taking place outside Europe.
Romania recorded the highest share of domestic trips, at 89%, followed by Spain at 87%. Greece, France and Portugal each recorded a share of 85%.
At the other end of the scale, Luxembourg had the lowest proportion of domestic trips, at 5%. Belgium followed at 29%, while Malta recorded 32%.
Spending was higher on trips abroad
Despite the larger number of domestic journeys, EU residents spent more on trips abroad than on travel within their own countries.
Expenditure on trips abroad reached €379.4 billion, compared with €266.2 billion for domestic travel.
For trips within their country of residence, travellers spent €90.3 billion on accommodation, accounting for 34% of total expenditure. Transport costs amounted to €56 billion, or 21%.
For trips abroad, accommodation expenditure reached €131.3 billion, representing 35% of the total. Transport accounted for €121.5 billion, or 32%.
