Homophobic attack in Nicosia: Victim lured through dating app

Date:

A homophobic attack against a 31-year-old man in Nicosia has been reported by Accept – LGBT Cyprus on December 29.

According to the report, unknown individuals used a dating app to lure a gay Cypriot into a meeting with the intention of assaulting him.

The victim arranged a date via a dating app with an unknown person, but when he arrived at the meeting spot, he was ambushed by a group of hooded individuals (5-10 people). They beat him, stole his mobile phone, wallet, and car keys, slashed all four tyres of his car, and hurled homophobic slurs at him. The 31-year-old was taken by a friend to Nicosia General Hospital, where he was found to have suffered multiple injuries and bruises.

Speaking on the programme Mesimeri kai Kati (Midday and Something), the secretary of Accept – LGBT Cyprus, Stefanos Evangelides, revealed that because this individual found the courage to speak out, Accept has received three more reports of identical incidents over the past three years.

“The date was part of the setup. This can happen to anyone; we must protect ourselves and our children,” he emphasised.
