22-year-old arrested after sending taxi driver to collect cannabis package

Date:

A 22-year-old man has been arrested after police seized nearly four kilograms of cannabis, €4,330 in cash and five mobile phones during an investigation in Engomi, Nicosia.

The suspect was arrested on Thursday as part of an operation investigating the alleged illegal importation and possession of drugs, possession with intent to supply, money laundering and conspiracy to commit a felony.

The investigation began in cooperation with the Customs Department after a package containing 2.56kg of cannabis arrived in Cyprus on October 26, 2026. The package was addressed to a specific recipient.

Taxi driver arrested and later released

During the investigation, a 62-year-old taxi driver collected the package from a location in Engomi on Thursday afternoon. He was arrested at the scene on suspicion of an offence committed in the act.

The driver told police that he had gone to the location at a customer’s request to collect the package and deliver it to a specified address. He said he did not know what it contained.

Following questioning at the Nicosia offices of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN), police said no evidence emerged against him.

Officers subsequently searched his home with his written consent but found nothing illegal. He was released later that evening.

Nearly four kilograms of cannabis found in car

Further investigations led police to a 22-year-old man who was seen driving in the area.

Officers placed his vehicle under surveillance before stopping it for inspection in Engomi.

During a search of the car, police found three plastic bags containing approximately 100g of cannabis on the passenger-side floor mat. The man was arrested at the scene.

A more extensive search uncovered additional cannabis in various packages, with a total gross weight of approximately 3.836kg.

Police also seized €4,330 in cash and five mobile phones from the suspect.

Suspect to appear before Nicosia court

The 22-year-old is expected to appear before the Nicosia District Court on Friday, where police will seek a detention order.

The Organised Crime Unit and the Nicosia branch of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit are continuing their investigations.
