Date:

An explosion occurred in the Ryzansky Prospekt district of Moscow early this morning, resulting in the death of Igor Kirillov, the head of Russia’s nuclear, biological, and chemical protection (NBCP) unit, along with his assistant. The assassination has been confirmed by the Russian Investigative Committee.

According to initial reports, an improvised explosive device had been placed on a scooter and detonated as Kirillov exited his limousine.

Kirillov was born on 13 July 1970, in the city of Kostroma. He promoted the Russian narrative about a “network of biological weapons laboratories in Ukraine operating on behalf of and supported by the American Pentagon,” claims that Washington categorically denied.

He joined the Armed Forces of the USSR in 1987 and graduated in 1991 from the Higher Military Command School of Chemical Defence in Kostroma. From 1991 to 1994, he served as a platoon commander in the Western Group of Forces. From 1995 onwards, he held various positions, progressing from company commander to brigade commander of radiation, chemical, and biological protection.

Between 2005 and 2007, he studied at the Military Academy for Protection of the NBCP unit.

From 2009, Kirillov served in various positions within the Office of the Chief of NBCP Troops of the Russian Armed Forces.

In September 2014, Kirillov was appointed head of the Military Academy for NBCP Protection. In April 2017, he became the head of the NBCP protection troops of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

Due to his direct involvement in military actions against a sovereign state (Ukraine), Kirillov was added to international sanctions lists. On 23 February 2022, he was sanctioned by Canada. On 19 October 2022, Ukraine added him to their sanctions list. He was also sanctioned by the United Kingdom on 8 October.
