Concerns are growing over a surge in mosquitoes and an increase in West Nile virus cases in recent weeks, particularly in Nicosia district.
According to an urgent notice sent to the Union of Cyprus Municipalities and the Union of Cyprus Communities, cases have been recorded in several areas, including the municipalities of Nicosia, Strovolos and Lakatamia, as well as the communities of Mammari, Deneia and Paliometocho.
Health Services have investigated all reported cases, with the relevant local authorities assisting in some instances.
Spraying carried out around patients’ homes
Speaking to SigmaLive, Mr Herodotou said all prescribed measures were in place and the relevant action plan was being implemented.
“When a case is detected, spraying is immediately carried out around the patient’s home, while door-to-door tracing is also conducted,” he said.
He added that numerous mosquito breeding sites were being identified both in Nicosia and across Cyprus’ other districts.
Standing water creating breeding grounds
According to Herodotou, authorities are finding containers and rubbish that collect water, abandoned swimming pools, overflowing or uncovered drainage systems, buckets and large earthenware jars, flowerpots and saucers containing water and larvae, animal drinking troughs, fountains and storm drains.
Standing water caused by construction work has also been identified as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Such sites can provide conditions for mosquito populations to multiply, complicating efforts to contain the spread of West Nile virus.
Migratory birds complicate efforts
Herodotou said controlling the situation was made more difficult by the way the virus spreads.
“The virus is also carried by migratory birds, which makes our work even more difficult,” he said.
Health Services remain in continuous contact and cooperation with the relevant associations and local authorities to implement the necessary measures.
