Police will implement security and traffic measures on Thursday, September 10, as various organisations hold a protest outside the Presidential Palace in Nicosia.
Members of the Police will be deployed in the area to ensure security, facilitate traffic and manage any disruption caused by the protest.
The public is advised to avoid travelling through affected areas where possible, exercise patience and follow instructions from police officers.
Organisers required to cooperate with authorities
Under the Public Gatherings and Parades Law 151(I) of 2025, organisers are responsible for ensuring that a gathering or parade takes place smoothly and peacefully.
Organisers must cooperate with the relevant local authority, the Police and the designated officer responsible for liaising between the Police and the organiser. They must also comply with instructions issued by the authorities.
The legislation allows the Police, where necessary, to impose restrictions on a gathering or parade and, in certain circumstances, order its dispersal.
These measures may apply if a gathering ceases to be peaceful, takes place in breach of imposed restrictions, or presents a risk of physical injury or damage to public or private property.
Restrictions may also apply to spontaneous or emergency gatherings where participants fail to comply with imposed measures.
Police powers over disguises
The law also gives Police powers to act where there is reasonable suspicion that a gathering may become non-peaceful because of the actions of an individual.
Where a person is suspected of committing or potentially committing an offence while concealing, covering or otherwise altering their appearance so that they cannot be identified, Police may order them to remove the item or disguise making them unrecognisable.
