Information received through Europol about planned contract killings in Cyprus prompted the immediate mobilisation of the Cyprus Police, leading to the arrest of three individuals who are expected to appear before court today, Saturday, for detention orders.
A police statement said the arrests were made as part of an investigation into a serious case involving conspiracy to commit murder and participation in a criminal organisation, with Cypriot authorities cooperating with Danish authorities and Europol.
“Following information received through Europol regarding planned contract killings in Cyprus, the Cyprus Police immediately activated an operational plan in cooperation with a team from the Danish Police,” the statement said.
It added that “the coordinated investigation and assessment of information and evidence led to the issuance of court warrants and an operation in the Larnaca and Famagusta districts, during which three suspects were arrested.”
According to police, the operation “highlights the importance of speed, operational readiness and international cooperation in tackling new forms of serious and organised crime,” adding that the force is “steadily strengthening its cooperation with Europol and European law enforcement authorities, with the aim of preventing and effectively combating organised crime.”
Investigations are continuing by a Special Investigation Team from Police Headquarters, in cooperation with the relevant European authorities.
