Cyprus’ Cabinet has approved a national strategy and the establishment of a national committee for multiple sclerosis, Health Minister Neofytos Charalambides said following Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting.
He described the decision as an important step towards strengthening care and improving the quality of life of people living with the disease.
Around 2,700 people are estimated to be living with multiple sclerosis in Cyprus, while approximately 109 new cases are recorded each year.
Four pillars of the strategy
The national strategy is based on four main pillars: the collection and use of data through a national registry; prevention, early diagnosis and treatment; rehabilitation and support services; and research and innovation.
The national committee will serve as an advisory body and will help develop and monitor a specific action plan with clear targets and timelines.
The Health Minister said the aim is to establish a comprehensive, modern and patient-centred framework of care focused on the needs of people living with multiple sclerosis and the continuous improvement of their quality of life.
OKYPY autonomy to proceed
Asked about the autonomy of the State Health Services Organisation (OKYPY), Charalambides said the process is expected to be completed within the timeframe set by legislation.
The House of Representatives has extended the deadline for OKYPY’s autonomy until the end of the year, he said, adding that there has been no change to the existing timetable.
Investigations into healthcare complaints
The Minister also referred to complaints raised by former Health Minister George Pamboridis.
He said he had instructed the head of the Ministry of Health’s medical services to investigate the issues as soon as the allegations became public. He added that he is also awaiting an update from OKYPY, which is expected in the coming days.
Regarding a criminal investigation involving two doctors who allegedly issued leave certificates to prison officers at the Central Prisons, Charalambides said the authorities should await the outcome of the investigation.
He added that appropriate measures would be taken if the investigation establishes that criminal or disciplinary offences were committed.
Nursing study allowance
The Minister also said applications for the newly approved allowance for nurses undertaking studies will open in September for the current academic year.
The scheme will apply to existing students, including those in their second, third and fourth years, as well as first-year students.
