Summer hunting season begins on 23 August

Date:

The summer hunting season begins on Sunday, 23 August, with the Cyprus Hunting and Wildlife Conservation Federation urging hunters to exercise caution, act responsibly and strictly comply with hunting regulations.

In a statement ahead of the opening of the season, the Federation said safety must be the absolute priority for all hunters.

It called on hunters to be completely certain of their target and what lies behind and around it before firing, to observe prescribed safety distances and to respect other hunters, landowners, private property, and everyone using the countryside.

Turtledove and quail hunting begins on 2 September

During the first two outings of the summer hunting season, on 23 and 30 August 2026, hunting both turtledove and quail is prohibited.

Hunting of the two species will begin on 2 September 2026, while hunting of woodpigeon will be permitted from 23 August.

“For this reason, hunters are urged to exercise particular care in correctly identifying game before every shot,” the Federation said.

Game reporting mandatory through Artemis Cy

The Federation also reminded hunters that recording their harvest through the Artemis Cy app is mandatory for all game species and during all hunting seasons.

For turtledove, quail, and woodpigeon specifically, each bird hunted must be recorded separately and immediately.

The Federation said harvest data is an important tool for the sustainable management of game populations and for documenting hunting activity, stressing the importance of accurate and timely reporting.

Hunters warned over heat and fire risk

With high temperatures prevailing during the summer hunting season, hunters are advised to prepare appropriately, carry sufficient quantities of water, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and not overestimate their physical capabilities.

Particular attention should also be given to the protection, rest, and adequate hydration of hunting dogs.

The Federation also urged maximum caution because of the heightened risk of wildfires.

It reminded hunters that lighting fires outside designated areas is prohibited.

Hunters reminded to renew licences

The Cyprus Hunting and Wildlife Conservation Federation also urged hunters renewing their hunting licences to select the hunting association of their choice during the process.

Selecting an association does not involve any additional cost to the hunter and, according to the Federation, helps support organised hunting groups and their work at local level for hunting, wildlife, and the Cypriot countryside.

Hunters are also advised to check permitted hunting areas before every outing and consult the relevant maps through the Artemis Cy app.

The Federation said safety, responsibility, compliance with the law, and respect for nature and other people are the responsibility of everyone.
