Limassol: 34-year-old Israeli drowns while swimming with his family

Date:

A 34-year-old Israeli tourist from Jerusalem drowned on a beach in Limassol on Tuesday afternoon, bringing a tragic end to his holiday in Cyprus.

According to Israeli media reports, the man was swimming with his family when, under circumstances that remain unclear, he disappeared from their sight.

His relatives immediately began searching for him along the shoreline and in the sea, with the search lasting for around two hours.

Paraglider spots victim at sea

Reports said local emergency services were alerted after the operator of a powered paraglider flying over the area spotted the man floating in the water.

Rescuers recovered him from the sea, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The circumstances surrounding the drowning remain under investigation.

Repatriation efforts underway

The Israeli volunteer organisation ZAKA said it is working with Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Cypriot authorities to support the victim’s family and complete the procedures needed to repatriate his body for burial in Israel.

ZAKA deputy director of operations Haim Weingarten described the incident as “a great tragedy”, saying the organisation remains in close contact with the family and is making every effort to return the body to Israel as soon as possible.
