Turkey is continuously reviewing its military readiness concerning Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean, according to Turkish Defence Minister Yaşar Güler.
Responding to a written parliamentary question, Güler said Ankara is regularly updating its military planning to safeguard the security of Turkey and the Turkish-occupied north of Cyprus, while closely monitoring developments across the region.
Readiness reviewed amid regional developments
Güler was replying to Hasan Öztürkmen, an MP from the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), who requested information on Turkey’s security policy regarding Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean.
Referring to what he described as the “sensitive balances” on the island, Güler said Turkey was adapting its military plans accordingly.
“While paying particular attention to preserving the sensitive balances on the island, we are meticulously updating our level of military readiness to ensure the security of Turkey and the ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’,” he said, using Turkey’s designation for the Turkish-occupied north, which is recognised only by Ankara.
The remarks indicate that Ankara continues to revise its military planning for Cyprus in response to regional developments.
Focus on the Eastern Mediterranean
The parliamentary question also addressed recent geopolitical developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Güler said Turkey is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with relevant state institutions.
He added that Ankara is assessing all matters related to the country’s national security and continues to implement measures in line with developments and operational requirements.
Israel’s actions in Syria
The Turkish defence minister also referred to Israel’s activities in southern Syria, saying Ankara is closely following developments there.
According to Güler, whenever events are deemed capable of affecting Turkey’s security, the necessary measures are taken without delay.
