A 37-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an investigation into suspected labour exploitation, threats of violence and other related offences at a livestock farm in Nicosia District.
Members of the Police Office for Combating Trafficking in Persons arrested the man yesterday following information about the possible labour exploitation of an elderly person.
73-year-old treated as a possible trafficking victim
Police officers visited the livestock farm and found a 73-year-old man carrying out cleaning duties.
The elderly man was taken to the offices of the Office for Combating Trafficking in Persons, where he was handled as a possible victim of human trafficking. He also gave a statement about his working and living conditions at the premises.
Farm owner remanded for six days
Following a coordinated operation involving the Office for Combating Trafficking in Persons, the Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department and the Nicosia Police Operations Unit, officers arrested the 37-year-old owner of the livestock farm.
A search was also carried out under a court warrant, during which police seized evidence related to the offences under investigation.
The suspect appeared before the Nicosia District Court today, which issued a six-day remand order against him.
The Office for Combating Trafficking in Persons is continuing its investigations.
