A dual British-Azerbaijani national has been arrested in Cyprus on suspicion of spying on RAF Akrotiri and passing intelligence to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), according to London’s Metropolitan Police.
Rashad Sultanov, 44, from Islington in north London, was arrested by Cyprus Police on 17 July and remains in custody as extradition proceedings continue.
The case forms part of Britain’s first overseas investigation under the National Security Act, led by the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command.
Alleged surveillance of RAF Akrotiri
According to UK authorities, the investigation concerns incidents that allegedly took place at RAF Akrotiri between 11 May and 22 June last year.
Police allege that Sultanov carried out hostile surveillance of the British military base before sharing the information with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
No further details about the alleged intelligence gathered or the methods used have been disclosed.
UK highlights overseas security powers
Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing in London, said the investigation demonstrates the UK’s ability to apply the National Security Act beyond its borders.
“This case shows we are able to use the National Security Act overseas when British military bases are allegedly targeted by hostile state activity,” she said.
Cyprus Police are continuing to hold the suspect while extradition proceedings move forward.
