A fire broke out on Thursday afternoon in Arsos, Limassol district, burning five hectares of dry grass, wild vegetation and waste after starting at an old landfill site.
According to the Fire Service, the blaze was reported at 2:47 pm in the community of Arsos. It spread across dry vegetation, discarded materials, large piles of rubbish and stacks of wooden pallets.
Major firefighting operation
The fire was brought under control at 6:19 pm following a large-scale firefighting operation.
Eight fire engines from Limassol Fire Stations responded to the incident, supported by six firefighting and personnel transport vehicles from the Department of Forests. Volunteer group ATLAS-DIAS, the Arsos and Potami Community Councils, and four aerial firefighting aircraft also assisted in tackling the blaze.
Fire crews remained at the scene overnight to deal with any flare-ups and maintain a precautionary presence.
Clothing handed to police
Speaking to SigmaLive, Arsos community leader Yiannakis Yiannaki said two folders containing clothing bearing a specific logo were found in the area.
He stressed that there is currently no indication linking the items to the Arsos fire.
The clothing has been handed over to police for further examination as investigations into the incident continue.
