UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Cyprus early on Tuesday for a series of high-level meetings focused on efforts to support a comprehensive and lasting settlement of the Cyprus issue.
In a post on X shortly after his arrival, Guterres said he had come to Cyprus “to express my commitment to supporting the communities in Cyprus in finding a comprehensive and lasting solution to the Cyprus issue.”
He added that the United Nations “cannot impose peace” and that “only Cypriots, through their leaders, can build it.”
Meetings with leaders
Guterres is accompanied by his Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín, who on Monday held separate meetings with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman.
The UN Secretary-General is scheduled to meet President Christodoulides on Tuesday, while his meeting with Erhürman is set to take place later in the morning at 11:45.
Full programme in Cyprus
At midday, Guterres will lay a wreath at the Peacekeepers’ Memorial outside the Ledra Palace crossing.
Later in the afternoon, at 16:00, he will visit the laboratory of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP).
His programme also includes meetings with the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot negotiators, the heads of the Technical Committees and representatives of civil society.
In the evening, the UN chief will attend a private dinner with the two leaders at the residence of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative, Hasan Diyan, at Nicosia Airport.
Joint meeting on Wednesday
On Wednesday morning, Guterres will hold a joint meeting with President Christodoulides and Erhürman at Nicosia Airport.
He is then expected to hold a press conference before departing Cyprus, concluding his official visit.
