Holguín-Christodoulides meeting ends with hope for progress

Date:

The upcoming UN visit by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres aims to encourage the people and leaders of Cyprus to prepare for negotiations, UN Personal Envoy María Ángela Holguín said on Monday.

Speaking after a meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace, Holguín said discussions focused on preparing for Guterres’ arrival on Monday evening.

“The mission of the Secretary-General is to facilitate, to encourage the people and the leaders to move towards negotiations,” she said.

Guterres has supported Cyprus efforts for years

Holguín said this was the reason behind Guterres’ visit, adding that the UN chief has been supporting efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue for almost a decade.

“He comes with this purpose and I hope that we will be able to make some progress,” she said.

She added that she had recently returned from a lengthy trip to Brussels and Ankara, where she held “good meetings” and discussed the issues needed to move the process forward.

Meetings continue with both sides

Holguín expressed her satisfaction at welcoming the UN Secretary-General to Cyprus and said preparations for his visit were ongoing.

She is scheduled to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman at 11:00am on Monday.

Guterres is expected to hold meetings with both leaders as part of efforts to create conditions for the resumption of meaningful negotiations on the Cyprus issue.
