Turkey is once again seeking to overturn the terms of the Cyprus issue, particularly on matters of security, through NATO.
Ankara’s aim is to create conditions whereby, either before or after a settlement of the Cyprus problem, the Eastern Mediterranean region, including Cyprus, would come under the operational control of NATO’s multinational headquarters in Adana.
The headquarters, for which Ankara is seeking approval, would be multinational in structure but would operate under Turkish command.
Turkey is also seeking the operation of another headquarters in Istanbul. A look at the map shows that the headquarters located within Turkey would cover the area Ankara describes as the “Blue Homeland” through NATO.
One would be based in Istanbul, another in Izmir, which is already operational, and a third in Adana, covering the Eastern Mediterranean and extending beyond it into the Middle East.
