Personal differences and financial disputes behind Zakaki shooting

Date:

Woman remains in critical condition

Police investigations are continuing into the attempted murder of a 46-year-old woman in Zakaki, allegedly carried out by her 55-year-old husband, who then took his own life.

Speaking about the case, Limassol Assistant Police Director Lefteris Kyriakou said officers immediately attended the scene, where they collected key evidence as part of the investigation.

Among the items recovered was the pistol believed to have been used in the shooting, along with additional evidence that is now being examined by investigators.

The 46-year-old woman remains in an induced coma at a private hospital and is in an extremely critical condition.

“Yesterday, doctors fought to keep her alive. She underwent a lengthy operation and remains intubated. Her condition is extremely critical,” Kyriakou said.

Personal and financial issues under investigation

According to police, early findings suggest the couple had ongoing personal differences, including financial disputes.

However, Kyriakou stressed that the investigation is still at an early stage and further witness statements will be required before investigators can establish the full circumstances that led to the incident.

Police also said there is currently no evidence that the couple had arranged to meet at the location where the shooting occurred. Investigators are examining how they came to be there.

Questions over service weapon

Responding to questions about how the 55-year-old officer came to have his service firearm, Kyriakou explained that police officers are generally not permitted to leave work with their service weapon unless it has been officially assigned to them personally.

In this case, according to witness statements obtained so far, the officer reportedly told colleagues he would be leaving briefly for work-related reasons. That claim is also being investigated.

No previous domestic violence complaints

Police said checks have found no previous complaints alleging domestic violence or violent behaviour against the 55-year-old.

Kyriakou said investigators have found no reports involving violence against his wife or any similar incidents.

He added that colleagues and people who worked with the officer had not provided information suggesting he had displayed violent behaviour.

Psychological assessments

Asked about psychological evaluations for police officers, Kyriakou said assessments are carried out during recruitment.

After joining the force, officers may be referred for further psychological evaluation or support if recommended by supervisors, requested by the officer themselves, or following involvement in serious incidents requiring psychological assistance.

Regarding reports that the 55-year-old may have had a second job, Kyriakou said he was not aware whether the officer had worked outside the police force. He noted, however, that officers must obtain official permission before taking on any additional employment.
