France and Oman have agreed to cooperate on demining operations and broader efforts to reduce tensions in the Middle East, with a focus on ensuring safe maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
French President Emmanuel Macron said the two countries will work with international partners to support demining operations in the strategic waterway.
The initiative aims to secure sea routes and guarantee “free and unconditional passage” through the Hormuz Strait, a critical global energy corridor.
Meeting at the Élysée Palace
The announcement followed a meeting between President Macron and the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq, in Paris.
Macron said the cooperation reflects a shared commitment to de-escalation in the region and to protecting international shipping lanes.
Focus on regional tensions
The agreement comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, where maritime security has become a growing concern following recent incidents affecting shipping traffic in the Gulf.
Both countries are expected to continue working with regional and international partners on stability measures.
Macron’s public appearance noted
During the meeting, Macron was seen wearing sunglasses due to a reported eye issue, including during official proceedings at the Élysée Palace.
Despite the informal detail, the talks focused on diplomatic coordination and security cooperation.
