Iran-US talks are expected to begin in Qatar, according to announcements from both Tehran and Washington, as diplomatic efforts continue following recent exchanges of strikes in the region.
Talks announced in Doha
The discussions are expected to take place in Doha, with US and Iranian representatives set to engage in meetings described differently by each side.
Iran has referred to the contacts as technical-level discussions, while Washington has described them as high-level meetings involving senior envoys.
Conflicting narratives over negotiations
US President Donald Trump said via social media that Iran had requested a meeting in Doha, while White House officials confirmed that US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would travel to Qatar for talks.
However, Iranian officials later clarified that while technical experts would attend discussions, no direct negotiations with the United States would take place at this stage.
Focus on regional de-escalation
Diplomatic sources indicated that the aim of the contacts is to establish communication channels for de-escalation, particularly following recent military exchanges and rising tensions in the Gulf region.
Attention has also centred on maritime security in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, where shipping disruptions and recent attacks have heightened concerns over global energy routes.
Hormuz Strait tensions persist
Iran has repeatedly stated that it intends to maintain control over transit through the strait, while signalling possible fees for maritime passage, a move that has drawn international scrutiny.
Shipping data shows reduced vessel traffic in the area following recent incidents, underscoring ongoing instability in the region.
Wider regional escalation
The renewed tensions come amid continued strikes and counter-strikes across the Middle East, including incidents involving vessels in the Gulf and military activity affecting neighbouring states.
Efforts by international actors continue to focus on preventing further escalation and stabilising maritime and regional security conditions.
