Beach umbrella prices trigger anger and complaints

Date:

Consumer concerns grow over beach charges

Rising beach umbrella prices and sunbed charges at organised beaches are drawing growing criticism from consumers across Cyprus, with the Cyprus Consumers Association reporting an increasing number of complaints from beachgoers.

Virginia Christou, Legal Officer at the Consumers Association, said many of the complaints come from large families, who face significantly higher costs when visiting the beach.

According to Christou, consumers are frustrated both by the Central Beaches Committee’s decision to allow higher maximum charges and by the choice of some municipalities and contractors to implement the increases.

Fears of further increases this summer

Christou warned that the wave of price increases may not be over, as municipalities that have not yet raised beach umbrella prices and sunbed fees could still do so during the summer season.

The Association has also received complaints regarding payment receipts on which previous years’ prices allegedly appeared to have been manually altered, raising questions about transparency.

She said consumers should be able to clearly see the prices they are being charged and stressed the importance of transparency at organised beaches.

Complaints over mandatory beach sets

The Consumers Association has also received reports from beachgoers claiming they were not allowed to rent a single sunbed and were instead required to pay for an entire sunbed-and-umbrella set, even when visiting the beach alone.

Christou said similar complaints had been recorded in previous years and continue to generate frustration among consumers.

She reminded the public that organised beaches are required to display price lists showing all applicable charges so visitors know in advance what they will be expected to pay.

Questions over justification for higher prices

Commenting on the increases, Christou said it remains unclear why some municipalities and contractors have chosen to raise beach umbrella prices and related charges.

She noted that no new fee or additional cost has been publicly identified that would justify the increases, further fuelling public dissatisfaction.

The differing approaches adopted by municipalities across the island have also created confusion among beachgoers, many of whom are unsure which beaches have increased prices and which have not.

Different policies across districts

In Larnaca, prices remain unchanged from Finikoudes to Mackenzie Beach, with sunbeds costing €2.50 each and umbrellas also priced at €2.50.

However, Christou noted that parking costs remain an additional expense for visitors.

In Paphos, increased charges have been in effect since 1 May. Meanwhile, Limassol Municipality and Kourion Municipality have announced that they do not intend to introduce price increases, although rises in other municipalities within the district remain possible.

Christou called on local authorities to provide clear and timely information about the prices in force at beaches under their responsibility.

Consumers retain right to use own equipment

Christou also reminded the public that sunbeds and umbrellas may occupy no more than 50% of a beach’s capacity.

She stressed that beachgoers have the right to use their own umbrellas, chairs or towels in the remaining free areas of organised beaches.

Consumers who believe they are being prevented from exercising that right should report the matter either to the Consumers Association or the relevant municipality, she added.
