Fidias effect on House Presidency race

Date:

The aftermath of Annita Demetriou’s re-election as Speaker of the House of Representatives has carried the unmistakable imprint of Fidias Panayiotou. Not so much because the four votes of Direct Democracy tipped the balance in favour of the DISY leader, but because of the political manoeuvring that ultimately sealed the deal. At the centre of the discussion is a video that, as later emerged, had been recorded well before the plenary session and vote for the House Presidency, and even before Direct Democracy’s parliamentary group met with its leader to reach a decision.

The controversy does not end there. Reactions began almost immediately, while the first political aftershocks became evident the following day. At the same time, suspicions started to circulate among critics regarding the timing of the emergence of reports concerning threatening messages allegedly sent to DISY leader Annita Demetriou.

A social media post by former DISY MP and former Glafcos Clerides Institute director Michalis Sophocleous expressing embarrassment over the video, combined with discontent among party members and MPs, as well as commentary from parody accounts online, contributed to an uneasy political atmosphere. Public debate became divided between what many viewed as a major political victory for Demetriou, the criticism surrounding the video with Fidias Panayiotou, and reports of threatening emails sent to the DISY leader. According to party officials, Demetriou received three threatening messages.

For his part, Fidias Panayiotou sought to justify his party’s support for Demetriou in response to criticism from supporters who had expected Direct Democracy to operate as an anti-establishment force. While Panayiotou is likely to defend the decision before his audience by highlighting policy commitments secured through the agreement, observers argue that any political cost from the episode appears to fall more heavily on Demetriou and DISY.

The affair has also raised further questions. How could Demetriou and those within the party leadership who were aware of the video recording have been so confident that Direct Democracy’s support would materialise while the party’s internal decision-making process was supposedly still ongoing? Some critics have questioned whether the uncertainty projected publicly was genuine or part of a carefully managed political performance. According to the report, most DISY MPs were unaware of the video’s existence.

DIKO and the TikTok controversy

The debate intensified following comments by DIKO president Nikolas Papadopoulos, who revealed that a similar proposal had also been presented to him. According to Papadopoulos, Direct Democracy had requested the production of a video featuring him and Fidias Panayiotou discussing the same policy issues. The proposal reportedly also included participation from government ministers, extending the political implications beyond Parliament.

Papadopoulos said he rejected the proposal without discussing it with President Nikos Christodoulides.

Speaking on CyBC radio, the DIKO leader stated that while he respected Direct Democracy’s right to support Annita Demetriou, discussions had taken place regarding policy proposals promoted by the party.

“Mr Panayiotou presented specific policy proposals that Direct Democracy supports. We informed him that we agreed with those policies because they are also our own positions. However, we made clear that anything involving increased public expenditure falls under the responsibility of the executive branch under the Constitution,” Papadopoulos said.

He added that the disagreement was not over the substance of the proposals but over the demand to produce TikTok videos involving the government and ministers.

“With all due respect, we can commit ourselves to matters that concern us, but we cannot commit on behalf of the President and ministers,” he said.

Papadopoulos also stated that he was unaware of any commitments ultimately secured by DISY, noting that he could not oblige anyone to participate in TikTok videos with Panayiotou.

Questions over the political negotiations

The revelation has prompted further questions about whether the refusal to participate in such a video effectively ended any possibility of cooperation between DIKO and Direct Democracy in the House Presidency vote. Until shortly before the parliamentary session began, support from Direct Democracy’s four MPs for Papadopoulos remained a realistic scenario. Had that occurred, political observers believed there was a strong possibility that ELAM’s eight MPs would also have backed Papadopoulos, potentially allowing him to advance to the second round and eliminate Demetriou from the race.

According to reports, however, ELAM had already been informed before the vote that Direct Democracy intended to support Demetriou. The information had reportedly circulated among officials from other parties as well, leading ELAM to proceed with its original plan of nominating party leader Christos Christou.

The central question remains whether it was already understood that rejecting the video proposal would also mean the collapse of cooperation between DIKO and Direct Democracy. If that were the case, some observers argue that alternative political strategies might have been explored before the vote took place.

For now, those questions remain unanswered, leaving lingering speculation over one of the most closely watched political developments in recent months.
