UK flight chaos continued on Wednesday, with more than 250 flights to and from British airports cancelled since early morning following a technical problem that affected air traffic control at 15 airports across the country.
According to Sky News, the disruption follows around 1,300 flight cancellations recorded the previous day, with flight-tracking website Flightradar24 showing that significant disruption remains.
Heathrow has been the worst affected airport, with 246 cancellations recorded by 6 am. Gatwick had 33 cancellations, while a further 16 flights were cancelled at Heathrow between 7 am and 8 am.
Disruption expected to spread
Problems have also been reported at other British airports, with further disruption expected as airlines deal with changes and delays to their schedules.
At Manchester Airport, two flights were cancelled after 7 am, including services to Heathrow and Paris. In Glasgow, flights to Heathrow, Luton and Gatwick were cancelled within the space of an hour.
Travel journalist and aviation expert Simon Calder warned of significant knock-on effects throughout the day.
Speaking to Sky News, Calder described the situation as “horrible”, saying dozens of additional morning flights scheduled to arrive at Heathrow were expected to be cancelled because many aircraft had been unable to depart from their previous destinations the night before.
Passengers urged to check flights
The disruption at British airports remains under close monitoring, with passengers advised to check the status of their flight before travelling to the airport.
The continuing UK flight chaos could affect schedules beyond the initial cancellations as airlines attempt to reposition aircraft and manage delays caused by the technical disruption.
