Wave of complaints over new phone scam in Cyprus

Date:

Cyprus Police has received a large number of reports from citizens regarding a new wave of fraudulent telephone calls linked to what authorities describe as a phone scam operation.

The calls appear to originate from Cypriot or international numbers and claim to represent financial transaction or payment platforms, as well as other organisations.

Automated messages mislead victims

According to reports, the perpetrators use automated voice messages instructing recipients to press specific numbers on their phone keypad.

Victims are told to confirm or approve alleged transactions or payments supposedly linked to their accounts.

Authorities stress that these instructions are designed to deceive the public into authorising actions they did not initiate.

Police warn the public

The Cyprus Police issued a strong warning urging the public to remain extremely cautious, confirming that these phone scam calls are fraudulent.

Officials emphasise that legitimate organisations do not request transaction approvals through automated phone instructions or unsolicited calls.

Advice for consumers

Police advise citizens who may be expecting legitimate online transactions to always verify any communication before taking action.

Checks should be carried out exclusively through official and verified communication channels of the relevant organisation.

Authorities underline that individuals should never follow instructions given through unsolicited calls or messages without confirmation from trusted sources.

Public urged to stay vigilant

The Police continue to monitor reports of the phone scam and encourage the public to report suspicious calls immediately.

They also remind citizens that awareness and verification remain the most effective tools in preventing financial fraud.
