President to meet livestock farmers over foot-and-mouth disease

Date:

President Nikos Christodoulides is set to meet agricultural organisations on Tuesday to discuss the management of the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak and related issues, including halloumi production.

The discussions come amid growing concerns within the agricultural sector over the impact of the outbreak and the measures introduced to contain it.

Review of outbreak response measures

The President will first meet the epidemiological team on foot-and-mouth disease at the Presidential Palace at 9:30am to receive an update on the evolving situation.

The meeting will also include an assessment of the measures already implemented, including support schemes for livestock farmers affected by the crisis.

Agricultural organisations seek intervention

At 11am, President Christodoulides will hold talks with agricultural organisations, which are hoping for decisive intervention from the Government.

Representatives of farming groups told the Cyprus News Agency on Monday that they want authorities to review how foot-and-mouth disease measures are being implemented. They are also calling for stronger cooperation and coordination in monitoring compliance with restrictions aimed at preventing the spread of the virus.

The organisations stressed the importance of ensuring that the response remains effective while minimising disruption to the agricultural sector.

Compensation and halloumi concerns

Agricultural organisations are also expected to raise concerns over compensation for affected farmers and the wider knock-on effects of the measures introduced to tackle the outbreak.

Particular concern has also been expressed regarding decisions affecting halloumi production, with farming groups seeking assurances over the future impact on one of Cyprus’ most important agricultural products.
