Turkish and Turkish Cypriot media reactions to election results

Date:

Turkish and Turkish Cypriot media outlets covered the parliamentary elections in the Republic of Cyprus through the lens of their implications for the Cyprus issue, with particular emphasis on political stability, the rise of ELAM and the new composition of Parliament.

According to Turkish Cypriot media reports, the election result did not significantly alter existing balances but instead confirmed the continuation of the status quo, alongside what they describe as increased support for political forces viewed with concern within the Turkish Cypriot community.

Emphasis on ELAM’s rise

Special attention was given to ELAM’s electoral gains, which were described as the most notable development of the vote.

The party’s rise was widely highlighted as a political shift with potential implications for intercommunal relations and the broader Cyprus peace process.

Analysts quoted in Turkish Cypriot media suggested that the fragmentation of the political landscape could further complicate prospects for meaningful negotiations on the Cyprus issue.

Reporting of election results

Turkish Cypriot outlets reported the results in detail, citing Democratic Rally (DISY) as first with around 27.2% and 17 seats, and AKEL as second with 23.9% and 15 seats.

They also highlighted the entry of new political formations, including ALMA with 5.8% and Direct Democracy Cyprus associated with Fidias Panayiotou, which secured 5.4%.

DIKO was reported at around 10%, retaining representation but with losses.

Concerns over political shift

Turkish Cypriot media described ELAM’s rise as a development that raises concerns regarding future intercommunal relations, citing its rhetoric on issues such as checkpoints and federal solutions.

Some analysts warned that the new fragmented Parliament could make it even harder to achieve progress in the Cyprus peace process.

Turkish media geopolitical framing

Turkish media outlets approached the elections mainly from a geopolitical perspective, suggesting that ELAM’s rise could influence EU–Turkey relations and strengthen more hardline positions on the Greek Cypriot side.

At the same time, they noted that DISY’s victory largely maintains the existing political framework without major strategic shifts.

The overall assessment was that the election results do not change Turkey’s broader stance favouring a two-state solution, with no immediate official reaction from Ankara.

Media consensus on fragmentation

Overall, both Turkish and Turkish Cypriot media converged on the view that the elections did not bring major political disruption but highlighted growing fragmentation and the strengthening of more nationalist voices within the Greek Cypriot political spectrum.

They also noted that the new multiparty landscape could make it more difficult to form a stable governing majority in the new Parliament.
