Fire breaks out in garbage collection vehicle

Date:

Firefighters in Limassol responded to a fire involving a large pile of waste weighing around two tonnes late last night.

The incident occurred at 21:28, when a fire was detected inside a refuse collection truck after the waste had been collected.

The driver, upon noticing the fire, safely dumped the burning load at the side of the road and immediately alerted the Fire Service.

Two fire engines from the Agios Nikolaos Fire Station Limassol responded to the scene and managed to bring the fire under control by 21:59.

No injuries were reported during the incident.

Batteries found inside waste pile

During firefighting operations, crews discovered that battery units were present inside the pile of waste.

The batteries were reportedly short-circuiting, which is believed to have caused the fire during collection.

Authorities have not confirmed how the batteries ended up in the waste load.

Municipal services involved in cleanup

A municipal emergency officer from the Limassol Municipality also arrived at the scene.

The officer took charge of collecting and managing the remaining materials following the fire.

The incident highlights ongoing risks associated with improper disposal of electronic components in household waste.

Further investigations into the exact cause are expected to continue.
