Rare May snowfall hits Troodos

A rare May snowfall has been recorded in Cyprus, with the Troodos mountain range covered in white at the start of May in what is being described as a historic weather event for the season.

According to a post by Kitasweather, at around 02:23 on May 4, 2026, snow depth at the ski resort was approaching 10 centimetres. Heavy snowfall is expected to continue intermittently for several hours.

Unstable weather across Cyprus

At the same time, the Cyprus Department of Meteorology has confirmed unsettled conditions across the island, with increased cloud cover, localised showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly affecting western areas.

Hail is also possible during thunderstorms, while winds are particularly strong. Coastal areas are experiencing winds reaching up to force 7, with gusts locally peaking at 8 to 9 Beaufort.

Unusual conditions for the season

The Troodos May snowfall stands out as highly unusual, as snowfall in Cyprus is typically confined to the winter months. The persistence of cold air masses combined with unstable weather patterns has contributed to this rare phenomenon.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, urging the public to remain cautious, especially in mountainous and coastal regions where conditions may become hazardous.
