Conflicting claims over naval confrontation
An incident in the Strait of Hormuz has intensified tensions after Iranian media reported that a US warship was forced to change course following a confrontation near the strategic waterway.
According to Iran’s Fars news agency, the vessel attempted to pass through the Strait of Hormuz but ignored warnings from Iranian authorities, leading to what was described as a response by Iranian forces.
The Strait of Hormuz incident reportedly took place near the coastal area of Jask, where, according to Iranian sources, two missiles were fired towards the US warship.
Local reports cited by Fars claimed the vessel was struck and subsequently altered its course. However, these claims have not been independently verified.
Iranian state television also reported that the country’s navy prevented US warships from entering the Strait.
US denies missile strike
US officials have rejected the Iranian account of the Hormuz Strait incident.
A senior US official, cited by journalist Barak Ravid of Axios, denied that any US Navy vessel was hit. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) later confirmed that no American warship had been struck.
At the same time, an Iranian official told Reuters that warning fire had been directed at a US vessel, adding that it remained unclear whether any damage occurred.
The Hormuz Strait incident comes after Tehran issued warnings to US forces not to approach or enter the strait, following statements by President Donald Trump regarding plans to escort commercial vessels in the region.
Iranian military authorities also warned commercial ships and tankers to coordinate movements with Iranian forces operating in the area.
Strategic waterway under pressure
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime routes for global energy supplies, frequently at the centre of geopolitical tensions.
The latest Hormuz Strait incident highlights the fragile security environment in the region, where military encounters and conflicting narratives continue to raise the risk of escalation.
