Macron to pay official visit to Cyprus on Thursday

Date:

French President Emmanuel Macron will pay an official visit to the Republic of Cyprus on Thursday, 23 April 2026, in what is described as a historic visit and the first official bilateral visit by a French head of state since Cyprus gained independence.

The visit underscores the high level of relations between Cyprus and France, which have significantly strengthened in recent years through strategic cooperation agreements.

Strengthened Cyprus–France relations

Macron’s visit to Cyprus follows the signing of an upgraded Strategic Partnership between the two countries in December 2025 in Paris, alongside a 2026–2030 Action Plan that outlines cooperation across a wide range of sectors.

It is also noted that this will be the second visit by President Macron to Cyprus within just 45 days, highlighting what officials describe as growing strategic alignment and political convergence between the two countries.

Key agenda: energy, defence and EU policy

During the visit, President Nikos Christodoulides and President Macron will hold a private meeting at the Presidential Palace, followed by expanded talks between the two delegations.

Discussions are expected to focus on the implementation of the Strategic Partnership, as well as cooperation in energy, defence, regional security, and European Union policy, particularly in light of Cyprus’ Presidency of the Council of the EU.

The Cypriot President is also expected to brief Macron on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus issue and ongoing UN-led efforts. France is described as a consistent supporter of efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem based on UN Security Council resolutions.

Macron’s visit to Cyprus further reinforces France’s role as a key European partner in regional diplomacy and security.

Defence and EU security cooperation

Defence and security cooperation remains a central pillar of bilateral relations, with France considered one of Cyprus’ most reliable partners both bilaterally and within the European Union.

The visit also highlights Cyprus’ emphasis on strengthening the EU’s mutual assistance clause under Article 42.7, viewed as a key element of Europe’s strategic autonomy.

Following the talks, both leaders will make statements to the media and later visit the Franco-Cypriot School, a symbolic gesture reflecting strong cultural and educational ties.

The visit is expected to further solidify the strategic partnership between the two countries, reinforcing shared priorities on stability, security, and cooperation in Europe and the wider region.
